Reviewer Michael did a great job describing it, but after going here I feel like I have to say a few words also. This is exactly the type of venue I love finding out about.
It is unmarked from the outside, with only a yellow lamp above the entrance (which by the way is a semi-secretive door that blends very well with the adjacent wall). Already I knew I was in for something a little different :) Our party of 4 stepped into a waiting hallway with a thick curtain on one end, and the 'rules' of the place posted on the wall. Yes, there are rules. No cell phone blabbing, no roaming around trying to hit on people, and no ordering anything you would find at a college bar (Jager Bombs? Not here!).
After a 5 minute wait behind a few other people, a very cordial (yet intimidating) bouncer led us to a booth. The place was bustling with people, but it was not chaotic. Everyone was seated, indulging in the lost art of conversation with their friends, which is exactly what this venue tries to promote. We took a seat and browsed the extensive drink menu (food is also served here). No vodka&soda or rum&coke here. The bartenders behind the bar here are true mixologists, and will prepare you concoctions with names like "Oldest Living Confederate Widow" (Bombay Dry, Lemon, Honey Syrup, Pernod Absinthe, House Orange Bitters) - so get ready to thoroughly enjoy your drinks! (I think they were about $12 per cocktail. At any rate, they did not disappoint!)
The atmosphere is very loungy, in a classic sort of way. The place is bathed in a calming dim violet light. Curtains separate the various sections, and since stumbling around is not prohibited there are a variety of booths, stools, sofas, and other places to sit. The music was eclectic and played at a perfect volume level to complement great conversation.
I could go on and on about the finer details of this place, but you really owe it to yourself to spend an evening here next time you're in Chicago.5 stars1gchiaren said on September 29 at 10:13 PM Reply0
The Violet Hour is an extremely unique experience. Luckily, my cab driver knew the location, as it is marked with only a discreet yellow light outside the entrance and no sign. Upon entering you immediately notice the unique code of conduct prohibiting cell phones, shamelessly flirting with other patrons, and notifying you of the lack of shots. After acknowledging the rules, you are shown to your table. The atmosphere feels almost like a southern plantation with eccentric touches like extremely high backed chairs and velvet curtains. I’ve heard this place described as an accessible Chicago equivalent to New York’s Milk + Honey. At your table, you are given an impressive drink menu, boasting cocktails from a time where bar tending was an art. The music was chill and the ice cube shapes were tailored to the cocktail glasses. This place is a wonderful place to practice the art of conversation with close friends.5 stars1Michael said on June 13 at 06:54 PM Reply0
